What is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a type of psychotherapy that uses art as the main form of communication. It can be a particularly helpful form of expression when words are difficult or impossible.

Do I need to be good at art?

You do not need to be good at art.  Unlike an art lesson, the aim of art therapy is not to create a perfect image. Instead, you explore feelings that come up as you create art and process them in a safe space where there is no judgement.

What happens in a session?

Sessions normally begin with art making. Later, we may reflect on feelings that came up during the art making and discuss what the image represents to you. I may share strategies with you to help you process challenging feelings. However, there is no set structure and each session is tailored to the client.

Year 6 pupil

“Sessions are 100% great. 3/3 equivalent to 20 million out of 10.”

Headteacher

"Izzy has gone over and above in her commitment to the children she is working with and her relationships with parents. Her approach to therapy has been patient, considered and has helped all of the children in her care with significant traumas to move on in some way."

Palliative care patient

The art therapy sessions have "given me time to reflect on my situation, talking to like-minded sufferers."
